 A.A. Watt Old Irish Whisky Bottle - Owners of the famous Tyrconnell Whiskey Brand

Watt’s Distillery located in the Abbey Street area of Derry was one of the largest in Ireland and produced the famous ‘Tyrconnell Whiskey’ named after a 100-to-1 outsider that won the Irish Classic in 1876.

It was built on the site of an old monastery and started distilling in the 1700s. In the mid-1800’s it was highly successful under the management of David Watt. The buildings alone covered eight acres extending beyond Abbey Street into William Street, Fahan Street and other Bogside Streets.

This particular bottle was gifted to the current owners family from the Watt family in the Donegal village of Ramelton around 1950.

Although the Watt distillery was fully closed down by 1925 stock may have been bottled by third party vendors for many years after, it was after all one of the largest distilleries in Ireland at the time of its closing.

We estimate this bottle to be from the 1940s, however, it may be a lot older 1900-1920 but so few examples exist today from the Watt distillery.

In exceptional condition owing to the way, it was stored over many years.
